Katahdin/North Woods
Maine Woods Discovery Package: Moose and Squirrel
Maine Woods Discovery Host: New England Outdoor Center

The Katahdin Area represents the largest expanse of forested highlands in the Maine Woods. The area is visually dominated by our state's most storied and tallest peak, Mount Katahdin (northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail). Baxter State Park and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway beckons to those craving the “wild land” experience made famous by Henry David Thoreau.
Outside of Baxter Park, the Katahdin Area continues to be one of Maine’s most productive timber regions. It’s history closely parallels the history of the woods industry itself, moving from early cutting of pine for long lumber to the harvesting of spruce and fir and now hardwoods for making paper. Much of this history is on display at the Patten Lumberman's Museum, where you can explore a makeshift logging camp.
Millinocket hosts an increasing number of guides and outfitters, some of whom provide rafting access to the whitewater portions of the West Branch of the Penobscot River (Rippogenus Gorge offers a spectacular rafting experience). In winter, attention turns to snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Several local restaurants offer excellent dining year-round; we recommend especially the River Drivers' Restaurant for great meals and cheerful atmosphere.
