Maine Huts & Trails

Maine Woods Discovery Package: The Valley Below
Maine Woods Destination Area: Maine's High Peaks

Voted 2009’s “Best Walk in the Woods” in Yankee Magazine Editor’s Choice Issue, Maine Huts & Trails offers a perfect year-round vacation destination for “soft adventure” outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.  Stop in at one of the remote lodges for homemade lunch in the woods, or travel from hut-to-hut on skis, snowshoes, or hike or bike and stay overnight, the possibilities are endless when you visit Maine Huts & Trails.

When completed, a total of 12 four-season huts will exist along a 180 mile trail, spaced a day’s journey apart. Today, two of the huts and 36 miles of trails are built and open; one is located at Poplar Stream Falls in the Carrabassett Valley, and the other one the eastern shore of Flagstaff Lake. The huts are 11 miles apart, but each one can be accessed from a nearby trailhead for a shorter, 2-mile hike or ski. The amenities, like hot showers, toilets, radiant floor heat, and home cooked meals, make it easier for those not wanting to carry a heavy overnight pack on the trail, and allow for multi-day adventures and memorable family outings.

The trails are easy to use, and allow for a side-by-side stroll in the woods.  The trail routes lie in the lower Valleys along streams and lakes, and allow for all hiking and skiing abilities.  The trails are groomed for light backcountry Nordic skiing in the winter, and offer extensive bridges and bog crossing structures for summer hikers. The 6’ wide Maine Hut Trail runs from hut-to-hut, and narrower single track side trails allow access to natural attractions such as scenic mountain water falls.

Huts are constructed using green building practices, and showcase off-the-grid energy systems. Tours of the renewable energy systems are available daily and provide a great education opportunity for kids and adults alike.  A summer events and seminar series kicks off in June and provides additional reasons to visit the hut with bird watch outings, painting workshops, yoga retreats and regional history presentations.  A annual ski touring race from hut-to-hut takes place in February.
